When My Prayers Met

Since the moment I stood at the back of Saint John’s waiting to walk down the aisle to marry Nick Hudson, I have been praying for my children. I lit candles for them in churches across the UK and France. They are my prayer. And they finally met!! I had been waiting, praying and hoping for this moment for 11 years.

After losing my only sibling, I desperately wanted Charlotte to have a little brother or sister. Naturally, she wanted a little sister. But when she found out we were having a boy, she said, “God gives us what we need, not always what we want. He must know we need a boy!” She has been totally in love with him ever since. I love her wise and tender heart so much.

We welcomed Grahame Brent Hudson into our family on August 13 at 7:40 p.m. He was six pounds, 14 ounces and 19.75 inches long. I had a delightful eight hour labor that gave me plenty of time to binge on Schitt’s Creek while I ate obscene amounts of Jello. Grahame actually entered the world during the scene where Patrick sings “Simply the Best” to David…it felt like a divinely inspired moment for so many reasons. That will be Grahame’s official lullaby…I’m trying my best to memorize the words!

The past few weeks have been overwhelming. I’ve been slowly processing what it means to watch my daughter learn to love her little brother, while there is still a brother-sized hole in my heart. It is such a mix of wonderful, wistful emotions. I really don’t know what else to say about it. It’s just awesome. These pictures by my talented friend, Heather Hooton, pretty much sum it up. Enjoy.
